My girlfriend lives on the second floor of an old victorian and she wants to screen in her porch so that her cats can go outside without leaving the house,so she wants me to do it . Ive been a framing carpenter for six years , but ive never done anything like this before, so my choices are 1)Do it myself with any help that you guys can give me or 2) Have a professional come in and build cusom screen inserts. So please, any advice would be appreciated. spaces between collumns are 4×5

Hi Jason,
No need to be afraid of this job, you can easily do it. Some questions: Is the porch covered now or will you be doing that? Will you be using treated lumber? What about drainage? Is it in a windy place? Are the cats declawed? (Screen could be damaged if not)
As far as the screens go, you can get them tight by slightly pulling the opposing sides of the screen panels towards each other when you fasten the screening, then let off and they spring back with tension. You can do this with bar clamps, wedges, in a jig, with a piece of wood laid across the whole thing, probably even bungie cords, lots of ways.
Fit these panels into your framing. I'd put a bevel about 10 degrees sloping the sill down and out, like on a window.

Hi Jason,
Take a look at screentight.com.
Its an easy solutions to screen panels. Local hardware
stores carry this system. Works well.
Good luck. R

Jason,
Last summer I built a screened in porch. The home owner specified low mainainance. The openings were 6'x3'. I went to the local glass contractors and they had a heavy duty extruded aluminum channel that I ended up using.
As mentioned above treated lumber is a quick and easy way to go.
