I just had soapstone countertops install. The contractor was afraid to screw the top of the dishwasher into the bottom of the soapstone, for fear or cracking it.
Has anyone installed soapstone? How do screw into it. Pilot hole?
Thanks.

Just an idea.... why not carefully drill a hole twice the diameter of your screw and slightly deeper than it will go in. Apply bondo to the hole and let it set up well. Now tape and put in your screw. This way there is no stress put to the top.
Get a couple of very short (wafer head if possible) stove bolts. Epoxy the matching nuts to the bottom of the counter where the mounting tabs are for the dishwasher. Once the epoxy sets, screw the DW to the nuts.
OR, if a new DW, read the instructions closely, many have side-cabinet mounting option.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I'm not sure how long the epoxy would hold up so close to the heat and steam from the dishwasher.
A threaded brass insert might be the way to go. Although, it would have to be epoxied into the hole also, the epoxy wouldn't be directly exposed to heat.

Step 6: Mounting the Under mount Sink to The Countertop
We recommend drilling slots on the bottom of the stone on the 4 corners of the sink cut out. You will drill a slot that can accommodate a screw head in the stone, so you can attach your clips to secure the sink to the stone. You will also run a bead of silicone along the edge where the sink is in contact with the stone.

See Andy's post. I've drilled holes into the bottom as well with no problem at all. That's the beauty of soapstone. Think of it like you're working with wood.
