Are you painting or spraying on a coating of something like Thompson’s, on all your exterior stonework? By that I mean chimneys, walls, wainscot, etc.

I did on some but not on all of it.. My thinking was I want the stones to wash themselves, I didn't acid wash which I believe opens up the stones, I simply removed all traces of cement from the stone work with water and let nature work at it.. I notice that european places with stonework that is hundreds of years old don't have a sealant on them. I doubt the value of doing so. Where it was sealed was close to the driveway,, there a little salt may splash up from melted snow etc, so it can't hurt..
I was called by a customer that had his brick 2 story sand blasted to remove the paint. He wanted the brick look back. He was having moisture & mold problems because the sand blasting left the brick very porous. I sealed it with a 5% silicone sealer in a petroleum based carrier. It worked very well and is invisible. I do pity the poor schmuck that tries to paint it again though,,, :-)
