I am dealing with rolled roof leaks myself in recent cottage purchase in Rouses Point NY…the downpours of July 29 caused leaks everywhere!!
I am looking at replacing as quick as possible…leaning toward metal.
Trying to get photos from phone…but not having luck. The cottage in circa 1950, uninsulated. The roof is 2×6 framed 24 oc. with 1×6 decking (assume T&G) Cape style with cathedral ceiling which I really like and don’t want to cover up inside.
I am interested in extending seasonal usage over time…probably never will be year round…but it would be nice to have a Thanksgiving there.
Any recommendations on specs for new roof with some insulation?
I have thought of:
tearing off old rough (which may not be necessary), adding rigid insulation, metal roofing
All input would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with Rouses Point.
Climate will play a part.
it's about 30 mins north of plattsburgh...average lows are below freezing November to March...
the footprint of the cottage is small...only 22x28
I have a niece that lives up their, just never heard of it!
yes.
tear off
dryin with 30# felt of one of the synthetics
Install EPS foam board as thick as you want.
Strapping over that using GRK lag head screws into the rafters
Metal roofing over the strapping

Piffin,
Thanks for the input. I got a quote with 1 1/2" foil faced foam and without. The contractor said the supply company recommended without due to potential moisture problems...even withis that anything I should worry about? I asked for foil faced...is that the problematic part?

Cliff
That's the reason I mentioned EPS foam instead of th efoil faced. The foil faced is polyisoanurate which is permeable so it can let water in and lose its insulation value. As an insulation, it is fr better in walls. R-7 per inch while the EPS foam is only R5 per inch, but for long term performance on a roof, the EPS is what I use.
