Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, all of it is considered bottom of the barrel by Gabe. I am not to be counted amongst the worst of the worst. If you want real framing information...don't listen to me..just ask Gabe!
I was gonna email U this thread!
anyways ... if U can't figure a common rafter ...
how do U set the ridge at the proper height to begin with?
jeff
Geeeeeeeeeeez ... I just thought it was a neat little gadget... nevermind.
You may have heard of Piffinscrews...........this has the potential to become the .........
Paul-B-Square!!

No, but I did buy some spray on hair-in-a-can... does that count?
I was thinking ...
if ya did get the ridge in place ....
couldn't you just set the ridge stock ontop .....
and use a square scrap block to transfer the cut lines top and bottom?
ok ... U really want to use string ... do it the old fashion way ...
tack 2 nails .... string the line ... and set your bevel gauge off those lines ...
Jeff
Sure sure... if you insist on being practical, but then you don't get to play with a new gadget, sheeeesh.
(anyone need a spare outlet box marker?) If you think I'm bad, someone gave me one of these : http://www.blindmark.com/

Way Cool, I need one of those!

Jeff...if you level off the ridge and plumb up from the edge of the overhang, the rafter will be exact length and the cuts perfect!
But Im not thinkin all this logical stuff is gonna slow Paulb down from getting his new tool!

blue, blue, blue...
It isn't a tool... it's a gadget!
You have to appreciate the subtleties here. A gadget is immediately identifiable by A) Being sold in a blister pack, B) Solving a problem you didn't realize you had until you saw the brochure and C) Being something that will promptly become buried in a drawer until years from now you think "sonovab*tch, where is that stupid gadget I bought?"...
Besides... being that this discussion concerns framing, aren't you disqualified?
;)

actually ...
the pocket fisherman IS a great little rod!
My Dad just said he finally lost his ... he worked on the RR as a foreman ... around here ... the railroads follow the rivers ...
guess how he spent most of his time when the crew didn't have any Q's?
That stupid thing actually cast a good ways out.
I gotta search the web to find a new one for him.
Jeff
aha!... a kindred soul... don't let them oppress you my brother, gadgets are what separate us from the Communist heathens (ummm or I just like them...)
Sounds like you have plenty to choose from for the Christmas tool give-away thread. : )
I never met a tool I didn't like!
>>if U can't figure a common rafter ...

Yeah, but it's like getting two tools in one!!
I Love A Hand That Meets My Own,
With A Hold That Causes Some Sensation.
Good point Jeff...and if the ridge isn't there yet...how can I attach the tool? Do I attach it while it's lying down on the lumber pile and pull the string to my eave? If the eave isnt up there yet...do I pull over to the other lumber pile where the trim boards are stacked?
I'm screwed!
