Ok, I can’t find a damn thing. I can’t find a supplier for any type of self adhesive of drywall tape. And I can’t find the thread that had the discussion in the first place. So….if the guys that were discussing the two types of tape would be so kind as to post the makers of the tape they are using I would like to contact the manufactures for a local vendor so I can try both. Please be kind and help an obviously confused and disoriented contractor in his hour of need. 🙂 DanT

DanT,
Send me your address privately and I'll send you out a roll for free. Mine which is water based is not available in stores, try one roll and see how ya like, cause later you'll have to buy them at least 20 at a time. BTW, it meets the tape spec., I think it's called C475.
The other tape is a light orange color and is available in Home Depots.
I'm thinking of the self-adhesive fiberglass mesh sold for use in drywall joints. Always seems to be sitting right next to the old-style paper drywall tape at the lumberyard or home center or discount store. 2" wide, various lengths in medium to large-sized rolls. Works fine and is probably easier to use if you haven't gotten down the knack of sticking the paper tape into a wet bed of joint compound.
I've also used it to reinforce corners and joints in plywood boxes and ugly boats. Because it is neater and quicker than cutting 2 inch strips from FG cloth and way, way cheaper than buying FG tape at the boating supply.
David Thomas,
With joint compound only use the paper tape - the fiberglass, well ya gonna have cracks!
