Self-grounding receptacles?
99 NEC 250-146 (I believe that the wording is same, but now 406.10 in the 2002).
(a) Surface mounted box. This allows the receptacles to be grounded simply by mounting ins metal surface mounted box.
? Does this apply to all receptacles or only those that are “self grounding” with the bronze finger on the back of the yoke ? It does not say anything aobut “approved device”.
(b) “Contact Devices or Yokes. Contact devices or yokes designed and listed fo that purpose shall be permitted in conjunciton with the supporting screws to establish the grounding circuit between the device yoke and flush-type boxes.”
What are these “devices”. Is it the bronze fingers? Or there anything else for this purpse.
If it is just the bronze fingers how can they be used on flush boxes. Flush boxes are often recessed into finished wall a fractiion of an inch and the fingers won’t make contact. There is no restriction or limation in the code about that.
Or am I missing the whole idea of that section.

Bill,
I think your answer is in ..(b) Contact devices or yokes....
the "finger" maintains pressure between the screw and yoke, I would interpret that to mean the finger does not need to touch the box to maintain a ground.
Why are you still going with a 99 code book?

Because I bought it in 2000.Actually we where on the 96 until recently. I have not read the acutal ordiance, but I think that the city has illegally changed it.The handbook from the HOA & City list "latest" as the code. I don't think that they can automatically give up control to an unelected group.
Get a 2005 book and go to an update class.
