I have two full baths. One on first floor other in basement. Each bath has it’s own septic tank but both are old and not working properly. I’ve decided to put a new single septic tank in with an ejector pump for the basement. Question: What is the difference between an ejector pump and a grinder pump? Which should I use? Also, any “play by play” instructions out there to install one?

As a complete digression, I might mention my only experience with a sewage pump. I had to inspect the old S&H "green stamp" warehouse in South San Francisco when they had a bit of a problem. Seems that they built a women's restroom in an added showroom near the middle of the warehouse and didn't want to tear up the slab to run a sewer line, instead they installed a sewage pump and pumped it through a waste line that ran up along a truss member under the roof and out the back of the warehouse. It seems that the waste pipe got plugged up with the various feminine hygene products that women tend to try to flush down toilets. The sewage pump just kept building up pressure until it blew out the overhead plastic waste line - leaving a vast area of the warehouse with some rather soggy and not too pleasant smelling cartons of merchandise. Definitely the making for a crappy day...
(You may want to make sure there is aa pressure relief valve on yours.)
*Hi Joseph, Only one piece of advice.Regardless which one you use, make sure its either in or over a sump pit large enough to hold 2 flushings and the entire contents of all drain piping. You haven't lived until you have to open one up and have to drain it. This is one time I kiss the ground for being management.Gabe
