Hey Everyone,
I am a newbie to Breaktime. I live in the city of Chicago and am about to undertake a major rennovation/addition to my house. It involves replacing my existing sewer line. According to Chicago building code the new line still must be clay tiles! Has anyone out there been had any experience with obtaining some sort of exception to this antiquated code. I think even a monkey would know that plastic makes much more sense, especially along the masive tree lined streets of the city.
Any information/suggestions would be appreciated.

You gotta be kidding!
I will ask a private plumber's e-mail list I belong to about this for you.
I wish I was!
I got the question out. Will let you know when I hear something.
Thanks.
Do they require galvanized pipe for supply lines, too? Manditory clay pipe sounds rather strange. Does the inspector own the local supplier for clay pipe or something?
Let us know what happens.
Good luck.
The only answer I get from the other trades is that the Plumbers union is so strong in Chicago, it's impossible to implement change. I was only 6 years ago they allowed PVC venting and drain lines inside the house!
I am reading their code right now. Unless I am reading it wrong it looks like CI may be allowed. Not sure though.
you want the link or do you have it?
I do not have it.

and look under 18-29-702.3.
Ok. Appreciate your assistance. R
This is from the City of Chicago Department of Water Management... the code itself was a little more complex...

I'll leave the strict interpretation to others...
Thanks a lot! I'm going to have to do some of my own interpretation!
