Shakes on a gable without sheathing??

I hope this question doesn’t sound stupid, but how do you put up Shakes on a gable on an older house that doesn’t have any sheathing?

    Sheathe it & then side it?

      What is on it now? Many roofs have 1x skip sheathing with shakes. It would be the same.
