This question is more than just sheathing but Advantech vs CDX vs all the other sheathing is something I actually haven’t dealt with.
I’ve “always” used CDX…1/2″ on the exterior walls and 5/8″ on roofs and PTS 3/4 on subloors.
Wood is light and a pleasure to cut and nail into in spite of the cost. I do however want to cut costs but not the quality.
So whats your feelings on the subject?
I “just” got the permit in the mail yesterday to do some extensive additions onto my circa:1680 house and will be submitting the plans to lumberyards for prices of material.
Also…I’ll be using LVL’s for the first time on the floor joists and ridge beams, etc etc…..any tips? Are LVL’s any different than 2x’s
I’ve also deceided to go with 2×6 exterior walls rather than 2×4’s especially being that most of the rooms will have at least nine foot ceilings so my feeling is it’d be a sturier job and better insulated.
The plans call for what I call, “plastic wrap” around the house. I just get a bad vibe wrapping that crap around my house. I feel more comfortable with felt paper for some reason. Whats your thoughts on that?
I know all these subjects have been discussed before but just wanted more current feelings.
Thanks in advance

In his first interview since the stroke, Ram Dass, 66, spoke with great difficulty about how his brush with death has changed his ideas about aging, and how the recent loss of two old friends, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, has convinced him that now, more than ever, is the time to “Be Here Now.”

Dang, you bring a lot of stuff up in one post.
Just one thought on the LVLs - Check our lengths CAREFULLY before you cut. The danged stuff is expensive. And if you have to order another one, you may have to wait a bit to get a replacement. Not everybody stocks them. You may or may not be able to return one that's cut too short. And you'll probably pay a restocking fee.
I've seen a lot of discussions on house wrap here. Some seem to hate it, but I haven't seen anything that would keep me from using it.

Good advice on the LVL's.
Waiting for more guys to come give me estimates this morning on all kinda things....nice to be on the other end for once.
Just did my two miles on the "dreadmill". Need to seriously drop 15 lbs (who doesn't) so it doesnt feel like I have two nail bags on. Just don't know how people do it....not to mention Bobby Walkers post on heart attacks. How can guys work when theyre 50# over weight?????
YA get good, then ya die before you get to finally use all this info we oldies have accumulated. I quickly gained an extra 15# by not caring and just eating and sucking down the brews after work....ugh. seems that happens when yer in a lull between jobs. Like rewarding myself for all I've done previous.
Well the new works a comin'....next huge "exciting" project so its that time again to get back in shape. Actualy had to turn some good work down yesterday...thats a first.
Can't wait to have a "Be Fest" here sometime........and don't tell me you aint a comin'..theres no crowds around here so don't worry....still I'm draggin' you and yours to NYC anwho...I'm gonna get the entire Taunton crew here to film us.... after all theyre just across the sound in conn....lol

I'm definitely carrying some extra weight. Since I work in an office its hard to get much exercise. Evenings and weekends are always filled with stuff so there's not much time.
Then I'll get a side job and go try to work 8 hours or so carrying nail bags and my big rear end around. End up with my legs hurting pretty bad.

If you end up having a fest - You just never know. Finances would prevent me from coming up there at this point. I still prefer CDX. The problem? What I'm seeing more of is 3-ply half-inch CDX, and that stuff drives me nuts. 3-ply is the only stuff that I've ever seen warp and delaminate. I'm looking at 7/8ths ply for the floor. There was a little ditty in FHB an issue or two ago aboout that. Trying to find some to take a peek. We'll see. I'm still in favor of CDX as a subfloor, mostly due to RFH and nail holding ability. Total opinion and personal preference there. Still...I like ply as a subfloor and ply for the roof sheathing. I STILL see OSB/Advantech occasionally telegraphing through the shingles on new construction. For exterior wall sheathing, I'm thinking of OSB. Partly due to cost, partly due to the crappy half-inch CDX that some of the lumberyard have been carrying. Cedar clap siding is nailed on the studlines (through the sheathing and into the studs), so nail holding is not a concern.

Agree 100%.

LVL's for floor joists? Or TJIs for floor joists and LVLs for the beams? Regardless, one thing to watch for is how the lumberyard takes care of the LVLs. They do absorb moisture and swell. If the yard has a low turnover, or keeps them uncovered, out in the elements, an LVL can gain 1/8th to 3/6ths in depth. When it dries, it shrinks back some, but not all the way, to the oriiginal size. That increased depth can be a pain depending on your mode of construction. Matching beam depths, or choice of hangers, etc.
I've also deceided to go with 2x6 exterior walls rather than 2x4's especially being that most of the rooms will have at least nine foot ceilings so my feeling is it'd be a sturier job and better insulated.
Make sense. For insulation, have you considered blowing cells instead of FG batts?

Use felt. Some use Roofer's Select, which is slghtly reinforced to minimize tearing. In the addition that I'm now planning on my own house, it'll be felt.

thanks for all the advice.....far as the house wrap.....I have no basis for my "vibe".....just think it may lock in harmful vapors such as the formaldahydes...etc etc...not sure that felt doesnt either.just a feeling I have about plastic wrap around my house. Kinda like putting a plastic bag over my head when it gets cold outside. Maybe a tin foil wrap might work.that way I can get a lotta hats and good reception...lol
The engineered beams will be for the floor joists, and thanks for that tip. I most definatly will check into wheres its been stored. I noticed in one yard I use its stored outside so I may just ask them to give me stuff from the factory if I do in fact use that yard which I doubt anyway.
The thing about that yard though, is they have boom trucks which can be a serious advantage over the yard I really like, but the prices.......? HAve to weigh it all out.
Thanks again

Hey newbie, more info!, lol.
16 oc? What siding, what finish flooring?
Anywho, I am leaning towards Advantech t&g for subfloors, 1/2 osb for walls, and for roofs? I still like 5/8 fir ply, but 1/2 osb @$8, or 5/8 Avan @$14, or 5/8 fir @$15? It's 5/8 fir unless it is a budget thing. Plywood hasn't impressed me in a long time, and eventually I'll lose the ply on the roof thing.
Housewrap, I Typar on the deck and stand the walls up. Felt "this". ;-) Just get your siding oil primed, and don't lose any sleep over it. Oh, wrap housewrap around your head, and then do it with felt, let me know which you like better. The one thing I can't get by with felt is it "grows" to the back of your siding, and any moisture will be held against the wood. It is just one of those me things I can't get over, right has nothing to do with it.
I only used tji's once, and they are slick, (and you need to get with the program, you are either using lvl's or tji's, 2 different animals, and you have beams or joists). Anyhow, why not get some 8x12 walnut beams, and be a frenchy?

Hey duche bucket..thanks......lol....Just finished workin and I cant absorb all yer post yet but I'll go back to it tomorrow.....I think I had one to many in the past 15 minutes,,,,,lol....Newbie????......2nd lol.....
16 oc stupid, whatcha thinking? a duh.....that'll be the day I'd EVER go 24"! WOW save a dozen studs and I dont mean homos.....lol #3
spose you aint kept up with what I bought..A circa: 1680 house with shake walls.....didnt know they had clapboard or vinyl back then...lol.
I do wanna look into Advantech from what you recommened along with a whole buncha other bros here.
Far as house wrap goes I still think its better for condoms then for a house.
Far as walnut beams goes....I think I'd rather spend the money on hair transplants....lol...
Thanks dude
Be Friday night......geezzzz its only 5:27PM

"duche bucket"? Ha, Andy's back, I was worried about you.
Boy, I might have heard you talk about a house or two, hmm, let me think... gotta say, I didn't know you had shingles tho. Get pre-stained white cedar and go with typar, no probs. No probs with the felt either, to be honest, it don't make a rat's arse. Do the wrap the head test tho, I live for this stuff. Wrap opening and corners with felt and rosin the walls, we're not building a rocket.
The sub-floor depends on the finish, this junk I live in has hardwood floors on the first deck, and I went with 5/8 fir for sub, it hasn't fallen down. 5/8=$15, T&G=$20. Advantech is a great deck, (for $16), but I would rather nail stripfloor to plywood. It never ends, and only you will be right.
Be right, for a change, douche bucket, ;-)
Oh, they had clapboard back then, I used to do the impossible, for the unreasonable, on this house, about your vintage...

and some others. Ever hear of Plymouth Plantation? Ya, new/old work. Argh! Wanna hand split some shakes bud? Work with me, and we could be two to froe. Skip that tread toy, we could hewn some beams, hew'n me. I put one of your homes back together after a semi drove into the living room, took the heart out of the place. Bring it to code and keep it real? Got a call right now, same thing, what is it with that town?
Be a wide road...
I like wood for sheathing myself. holds my siding much better than cdx and OSB. You might be lucky and find a local mill that can supply you with 1x6 or such at a reasonable cost. It still might be more than cdx but you have the advantage of better nailing, better breathability for both your siding and your walls and the pleasure of working with something real.
I've been framing alot lately with engineered lumber. Seems people (architects and clients) think it is a superior product. A few observations... like someone mentioned, check your stock at the yard first. There is a little fine print with the material about keeping it from exposure to the elements, ie. rain snow and sun. the last few houses using BCI and LVL there was as much deviation in dimension as I would expect with dimensional lumber. And the engineered material around here is a good 25-30% more expensive. Also there are strict guidelines for drilling holes, cutting webbibng, cantilevers etc. It does not take much drilling in an LVL before you lose it's structural capacity and warranty.
Also engineered lumber takes a bit more engineering to fasten together. read the specs to be sure you are nailing properly.
Forget the plastic wrap. period. The stuff is worst than worthless. I have posted before, but I like red rosin especially under wood siding which is primarily what I like using. If you take the time to install your siding properly, you do not need a secondary weather membrain.
I avoid all OSB type goods with a passion. But definitely if you intend to use a strip nailed wood floor. But I find more problems with swelling, blowouts and such on houses with OSB.
If your house is 1680, especially, use boards...real wood. Your house will live another 300 years.
