I have a room 25′ I 31′ with 9′ ceilings. The ceiling has been sheet rocked and primed with US First coat and then painted with a ceiling white. What do I do to hide seems and butt joints? It appears that some crowns are in the ceiling and the seems and butt joints appear in low angle light. We have feathered joints out further and have a slight orange peel effect although on areas newly feathered the orange peel effect is in many places not apparent.

Simple answer, finish it better. Wider is not always better. Use your knife to check the flatness of the taped joints. Hold its edge 90 to the surface and look for hollows. Circle them with a pencil and go back over them with compound. Check 'em again when dry. Shouldn't see any daylight between the knife and tape job.
The paint "texture" not looking right? Can't be sure here. I usually skim the edges of the joint with a super thinned combpound. Doesn't even need sanding. Just "washes" the board. Makes the transition from compound to raw bd. less visible. I thought that 1st coat stuff was supposed to do the same thing. Best of luck.
*i What can I do to hide seems and butt joints"You can spray the ceiling to hide these problems. Throw some texture up there, takes care of all your woes.MD
*some lighting situations are going to show every single defect.. these situations cry out for a textured finish..sometimes you can control the lighting..we use skim coat plaster so we have a little more control.. but we will still texture the ceiling unless there is a really good reason for smooth...bathrooms usually get smooth... and most kitchens..the texture is pretty light , not like the seashell they talk about in california....
*We rarely see a textured ceiling in Mi. I guess we Michiganders either finish the board better, or we just never look up after were done.Lawrence, theres a good possibility that some of your butt joints landed on a framing member that was crowned down lower than the adjoining members. This would magnify the projection beyond the plane of the ceiling. You are probably better off learning to live with imperfection, or you are going to have to do a major repair. I'm assuming the butt joint was proerly done already, and is still visible. I have a suggestion, but it will probably entail the redoing of the entire ceiling. If you are that obsessed, let me know. I have the perfect solution.blue
