We are building out and addition, and one partition wall has some studs which are uneven as measured horizontally with an 8′ straight edge (a level on edge) at a few elevations. The wall will be half tile over mortar board and half 3/4″ tounge and groove. Some of the areas are out of straightness (left to right, not up and down)by as much as 1/4″. Two questions:
1. What is proper tolerance for this application? I can feather out the mortarboard, and the 3/4″ stock will be fairly stiff as well. I assume about an 1/8″ or less is OK.
2. In shimming, which is better, planing out the high spots with a cheap hand planer (being carefull not to hit nails) or ripping some thin shims and tacking them in place?
Thanks in advance.
