I would like to find out how to estimate the amount of shingles needed to cover my roof. It is a hip roof with a 5/12 pitch, the roof size is 39′ long and 29′ wide. I wish I had not fallen asleep in school for that Trig. math lesson!!!!

About 13 square for the roof and another two for the ridge caps. I'd order an extra two square for waste and mistakes. If it's a hard to get style, I'd order even alittle more so I don't have to wait five weeks if I screw something up.
*I come up with 1440 s.f. shingles plus 5-10% waste on a hip equals 16 square. 80 l.f. cap shingles equals just over a square of 3 tabs for caps. I'd get 17 square but I never have to run for more shingles, and I have no qualms about having a few extras. Exactly what Ryan said but I figured different. That's the thing about estimating, each guy has his own way.Tom
*don't forget the 40 feet of Shingle Vent II....160 feet of drip edge,... and the 4 rolls of Roofers Selectplus two short rolls of Ice & Water...
*Mike,Doesn't he need 136' of Ice & Water shield? Isn't a roll 33'? So he really needs five rolls. Where am I screwing this up?Rich Beckman
*rich , i was just counting 3 feet along each eave... he may have to go up the rakes too, so your number would be right...short roll..if i'm carrying it up the ladder..long roll if we're working with a ladder hoist or cutting it into pieces
