watched a guy roofing the other day. lay down the shingle then…bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam with the nailer across the shingle. no regard for where the butt joint of the next course will be. if there’s a nail in the joint then so be it
3 tabs are idiot proof. you nail above the slot and avoid having a nail mid tab. that nail would be visible under the next course. you need to have a nailing plan with architects
I always watched where I nailed in respect to the butt joint, keeping at least 3″ away most of the time. this guy was proud of the fact that he was using 8 nails per shingle, even though he was producing an inevitable leak
am I wrong? am I wasting my time?

The nailing plan with those is nail em like 3-tabs. nail with-in 5/8 of each end, and 2 nails 1 1/2 inches apart about a foot from each end. Never need more than 6 nails per.
If you nail like that you'll be fine, doing it for 20 years now.
Five nails per shingle, because three and five are both prime numbers, so the divisions can never line up (you don't want them to, of course).
Maybe that guy should be hand-nailing instead of using a gun. I have seen that syndrome before: more is better as long as it's easy. As soon as there's an effort required, less is better.
Duh.

"Five nails per shingle, because three and five are both prime numbers, so the divisions can never line up (you don't want them to, of course)."Works fo rme, but a lot of codes require six.

In these parts the wrappers say to cut off tabs for the starter course. Any body here do that you figure?
Going through an past issue the other day. You were making windows. Good stuff. If we do a road trip to your hill, I'll beer ya one.
Have a good day

I do. on 3-tab. If you don't, each tab has to be plastic cemented to the starter.
I actually lay the cuts in the starter at the edge of the eave metal, run first shingle 11 1/2 from the edge and cut the tabs on starter later.
Its a code thing in FL

Buy a bundle of GAF Pro Start. It's cheaper and better than cutting tabs. It will cover 120 linear feet.http://thewoodshedtavern.com. = no peer mods!
"better than cutting tabs."That's argueable and regional

Lemme know when so I can give you a real snow report. You won't get the truth off the official website, LOL.
As to cutting off the tabs, nope, I don't bother. Don't know anyone else around here who does, either. Instead of buying starters, I usually use leftovers, mismatched colours, whatever is lying around. Saves the HO a few bucks. Spin 'em 180º and nail 'em down whole. Squirt a dab of pitch under each tab on the first course if the house is too exposed to wind.
Gotta remember, half the year those shingles are sitting under 14 feet of snow so they're not going anywhere, LOL....

"I usually use leftovers, mismatched colours, whatever is lying around."That doesn't save anyone anything...it costs them. Typically, I leave any loose shingles for the homeowner to save for future repairs. All full bundles are returned for credit. That doesn't leave any "laying around". Adding a bit of pitch can be problematic too because, although it's acceptable, it can lead to bubbling of the shingle if too much pitch is used. The use of starters guarantees that you meet the manufacturer's recommendations although that isn't always the primary decision factor.http://thewoodshedtavern.com. = no peer mods!
I used to do that as a matter of course, until I got one too many phone calls demanding that I come and 'get this scrap out of my yard!'. Now I collect everything and take it away unless specifically asked to leave it.
Funny, calls like that always come from HOs of the female persuasion; men always want to keep every piece of anything that might be useful, 'just in case'.

Wjats the nailing like in wind zones , like coastal US? Florida etc
I thought it was 6 or 8
Coastal NC is 6 nails. 3 tab is 1 in each end, 1 on either side of the "gutter". Dimensional is the same concept except no "gutter"

We don't get hurricanes here in the mountains until they've had the snot knocked outta them by getting dragged cross country. But we do get some viscious norwesters with gusts up to 110k and sustained winds in the 50s and 60s. Had one last night, as a matter of fact.
My experience is that additional nails don't help if there's enough wind to do any damage. What keeps the shingle from peeling up off the roof is the sealer strip, not the nails. Once it starts to peel up, all the nails in the galaxy won't keep it in place.

Buddy at hockey last nite who is a big skier told me Whistler already received 320 cms of snow. Wow, we are still waiting for our first dumping. We live by a little hill, the owner loves being able to go for Christmas.
I usually use the leftovers from the last job too. The obc still says tabs upward.
My girls are going to Quebec in the spring for their class trip. I told them they take Canadian at par , they didn't think that was funny.
Have a good day

"Any body here do that"My hand is up

I think it's the other way around. Nails will show in three tabs but won't in dimensional.
8 is better than six. It's overkill but maybe is necessary in high wind areas...like the North Pole?
the other way around? read what I said
There are clear instructions on each package of shingles. It's best to follow them. Lots of folks don't read the instructions. If the nail is in tight to the surface, there shouldn't be a leak around the nail within the useful life of the shingles.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
A lap on the nail will leak eventually. Thats why the instructions say don't do it.
Yeah never heard of 8 nails.
Marerick,
I love those guys , I call them 'machine gun nailers'.
They are sooooo fast, their like magicians, the hand is faster that the eye.
But with that narrow nailing target on the archies, ask them if they worry about 'high nailing' voiding the warranty and they look at you like your talking Chinese.
I guess that is the nature of piece work.
Regards Rich
Couldnt agree more. I fix at least 3 roofs a year that leak due to these nail gun massacres. A millon random nails mostly crooked and not sitting flush lining up with the seams. These guys dont know how to flash especially chimneys. Real fast real sloppy always leaks
