How far do you let your shingles overhang the drip edge?
In Florida we only do about 1/4″ but was just doing some consulting work in South Carolina and saw a bunch of homes with about a 1″ overhang. My concern is this long lip will be a point of uplift for high winds but some local guys told me their concern is what they call the siphon effect where rainwater gets drawn back up under the shorter lip and under the shingle.
Thoughts?

1/4 or less in Florida, the bull won't let it get under the shingles. Everywhere else I've roofed uses an inch, except the Gulf Coast.
I've used an inch overhang since 1967. I just replaced the roof I put on my mother's house, which I built in 1980. It's a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean in Ocean City, MD and has been through two hurricanes (mild, category 1 hurricanes). I didn't use drip edge.

Or 2.54 cms for the metric folk.
Have a good day(Did you finish the imported beer yet?)

With drip edge, I use 1/2" overhang. Without drip edge, I use one inch.
I don't think they use drip edge in south carolina do they?

All the homes I saw (maybe 25-30?) had it.
It's just - seems like every time I hear of somebody not using it as standard practice here on the forums, it is somebody from SC or Georgia

I lived in Charlotte, NC and York County, SC in the early 90's. Never saw any drip edge. A lot of times the builder wanted the roof before the fascia, I'd leave 5 inches on all sides. Then they'd build soffit and fascia. Looked like shid.
I'm in SC quite bit and as a rule they don't use drip edge. Maybe on new roofs but not on the older ones.
when'd you start leaving NC off the list?http://www.tvwsolar.com

I do know that NC has higher standards for licensing and inspections. And you pulled my pants down and spanked me for negative comments.;)

Add rain soaked BC to your list. Very few drip edges on houses here.
You beat me to the punch.roger
The last time a roofer offered me drip edge it was for the gable ends. He didn't even bring up drip edge at the eaves. Do you think it is because most houses here have gutters?
Where don't they have gutters? Other than my first house over 35yrs ago I've always used drip edges( they call them "starter strips"here for some reason.) Did my house here last year and used drip edges all around.
A few years ago I mentioned it to a roofer and he said "we don't use them out here".roger
I like 3/4" w/ drip. Hides any facia wander pretty well
nearly every mid tn roofer, 2" w/o drip.
they be quite saggy

3/4" beyond the lip of the drip edge. Can go a bit less on steep roofs. I also use a 1/2"-thick shingle moulding behind the D-E if the pitch is less than 3 in 12, but not many guys up here do that.

Interesting replies guys. Thanks
No one here would ever leave out the drip edge (its even a code requirement as far as I know) and no one ever goes beyond 1/4-3/8" overhang due to wind uplift concerns.
I guess some things do vary around the country?
Worked on my brother's house in SC this summer. Had his roof replaced after Hugo, 20 years or so ago. No drip, one inch overhang, no felt, no asphalt. Sorriest roof job I've ever seen since my parent's house, also in SC.
We use drip edge in NC here is the proof. Not the best picture but look close.
Is that drip edge on the sub-fascia?http://www.tvwsolar.com

I saw it driving by the other day. I did not stop and look close, but from the road it appears to be drip edge installed upside down/ backwards.
The wide side is on the fascia. The building is a hip roof gazebo type structure in someones front yard.

Even better it the fact that it not even a half mile from the sound. Wonder how long that 2x6 fascia will last?
I always use drip edge down here. I do remodels/ additions and even when doing a tear off I install drip edge.
Finishing up an addition and tear off of existing and used drip edge. Building inspector (Jones County) was impressed that I did he said he never sees it there.
John
Early 90's no felt required over 6/12 in NC
The roof has felt here and there just not at the edges. They just slashed it off where ever and if it didn't reach the edges apparently it didn't matter.
Yeah, its like that up there, NC and SC
Lotsa 25 year old asphalt shingles on 2.5/12 shed dormers here without felt....
I'm surprised with the minimal damage.A La Carte Government funding... the real democracy.
Are you cutting tabs off for starter strip like the label says to get the first sealer strip down close to the edge?
Have a good day
Cliffy
If not he won't pass inspection. Or bull under each tab, not necessary on archys.
I've never had a building inspector look at a shingle job.
Have a good day

In Florida, you have permits and two inspections.
In my neck of the woods I bet at least half the roofing happens on weekends for cash. We live pretty far from the ocean or tornados though.
Have a good day
Cliffy
Oh, that happens here too! And then the homeowner, if they didn't do it themselves calls the County for help at the first leak claiming they didn't know the guy was unlicensed or did it without a permit.
I used to be the guy in charge of the department that took those calls. At least 4 or 5 every Monday.
They gonna be a lot of mad people in florida next major hurricane. I watched many roofs being 4 nailed in Pensacola area.
Every bod;y gonna hate them good deals they thought they got.
I agree. Even some roofers I know of are going to be sorry as they have done some second-rate work just to get jobs and I am afraid its going to come back to haunt them.
Bad work always comes back to haunt you.
In my area, we have to use roof cement along the starter to hold it down. Thats why I was surprised to see the long overhang in SC.

I ended up with 3 roof inspections (plywood nailing, membrane and shingles/final) on my addition this spring and they actually got out of the truck, climbed the ladder and looked ;-)
They don't want any overhang at all, shingles are flush and they do check to be sure the leading edge is cemented down. I am in the 130 zone. (Lee County west of 41)We don't have gutters most of the time here.
When you get 2 inches of rain in 15 minutes the gutter just backs up the water. (think "ice dam" up north)
You want it to get off as fast as you can.
Yeah same here...they actually look! (Hillsborough County)
You can go about 1/4" here but thats it. And the same things with the gutters here as they fill up fast and besides, most get filled with pine needles or leaves as they get in no matter what!
Cliffy, they sell starter that eliminate the need to cut off the 3 tabs. It's cheaper, faster and is required if you want to earn the Golden Pledge from GAF.
if you want to earn the Golden Pledge from GAF.
That's approximately equal to earning the Golden Pledge from me. I'm still waiting for the GAF rep to show up from the only warranty claim I've had from them. 14 years and counting. copper p0rn
