Al,
A few years back, here in California, we had a bridge wash out on interstate #5 and a local engineer and well known talk show host, Bill Whatenberg, suggested they use an old rail road 'flatcar' body to span the gap. The state bought into the idea and used 8 - 10 of them to build a temporary bridge "by-pass" for the freeway. I've also seen this idea put to use up in the gold country near the town of Sonora. There, a flatcar has been in use as a bridge to span a small creek for the last 35 years and is still in use to this day. The only caveat might be a good rust preventive paint job and semi-annual inspection. I haven't the slightest idea about how you would move such an object, and put it in place, but then you didn't ask so I assume you've got that covered.
