I searched the archives for this answer but couldn’t find anything specific to this case.
I am going to tile a shower ceiling in a new bathroom. The drywall guys installed durock on the walls and regular drywall on the ceiling (regular meaning 1/2″ gypsum). They stated this is the norm and that MR board on the ceiling promotes mold growth and durock on the ceiling will look lumpy. The contract specifies durock for baths and showers but didn’t specific ceiling. Before I go back to the business owner, I want to make sure I have my facts straight.
Any tile guys out there have a preference? I was blown away about the point about not using MR on the ceiling but this isn’t my area of expertise.
At the end of the day, I can replace the board on the ceiling easily enough. I just want to make sure I’m using the right product.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Old guy I used to work for had a saying; "By the time we get done talking about it, we could have it fixed!"
You are absolutely right! Durock lumpy? Huh? What was that?

I'd be using the Durock up there, just like everywhere else in the shower that I'm putting tile.
Sounds like they were either being lazy or cheap, or both.

If they used 1/2" for the ceilings, you may have other problems as well ... ceilings are usually 5/8" to resist sagging.
Durock is Durock. If it gets lumpy on the ceiling, it will get lumpy on the wall.

thanks all for the quick feedback. OK, so I feel better about talking to the sheetrockers about Durock on the ceiling. It may take less time to just do it myself so that is the route I may take.
FastEddie, regarding 5/8" on the ceiling, I thought this was generally done when using trusses or some other solution where the spacing is 24" instead of 16". Do you see 5/8" on the ceiling for standard 16" OC joists? Or were you just speaking in regard to shower ceilings?
Yep, i'm with the others.....durarock--i've seen tile over MR....over sheetrock-shouldn't be done. make em come back and fix it. Fast eddie--i've with Mojo of the 1/2
I always thought 5/8 was on 24 inch centers? When we drywall ceilings we always double screw ever 8 inches-----if one pops, the other will hold it. Never had a problem-----whats your take?
5/8" as a general rule. Just cuz. Don't ask so many questions, Grasshopper.
