I have an existing upstairs bath which has served well for many years but now we want to install a shower and wonder if the old 1.5 ” drain will serve or is it not only code to have a 2″ but truly advisable. Thanks

truly advisable
Most mine here only 1-1/2"
why advise more?.
Excellence is its own reward!
less clogging but mainly because of some of the extremely high flow heads so popular these days... you know... the sunflower type. 10gpm!
my plumber just told me the same thing last week...
Both code and gooder....

My plumber just explained this to me. Since a shower (only) doesn't ever get the big rush of water you get from draining a tubful of water, a 1-1/2" drain is more prone to clogs. That being said, we shower rather than bathe in our tub with 1-1/2" drain 99% of the time without constant clogs. (Now that our long-haired daughter is home for the summer, that may change!) Now, I wouldn't recommend violating any codes, but if you are doing this for your own use and changing to 2" would be a big hassle and you use water conservatively, you might be just fine.
