I believe that my shower was installed without a P-trap and drains straight into the septic tank. I’m not in a financial position to install one at the moment, and was wondering if there was anything to do in the short term to stop smells coming up through the shower drain.

You can use a trap seal if it truly is your shower drain…like this: https://www.supplyhouse.com/SureSeal-97041-2-SureSeal-Inline-Floor-Drain-Trap-Seal-SS2009V?gclid=CjwKCAjwmK6IBhBqEiwAocMc8gzciNc7I32zaL2_pWv6zkHb62_FiHNeQcWD-YpX76YOUTzwNcdTghoC1CgQAvD_BwE
More likely though, the smell is coming from the base of your toilet, where the wax ring has lost it’s seal. Next time you get a heavy rain and the smell is there, sniff around the bolts at the base of the toilet to make sure that’s not the source of your problem.
