I am gathering estimates for a bathroom remodel. Owner wants to install pre fab shower pan, in same location of existing shower. Ceiling under shower is not to be touched. Can drain be hooked up from above? I will probably be replacing the sub-floor in bathroom If joist direction permits, could drain be hooked up by reaching under pan from side? Do I need to open up ceiling below?

There is a type of shower drain that can be installed from above. I'm not sure what it's called so I'll describe it for you. The drain attaches to the pan the regular way but will slide loosely over a projecting 2 inch waste line. The space between the shower drain and waste pipe is then caulked with a thick rubber grommet/gasket. Then cut the waste line off flush to install the strainer. Hope I'm explaining it well enough.
You rough in the drain to it's exact location. The drain (probably/maybe) supplied with shower floor will be a rubber packed donut to secure the drain collar to the drain pipe.
