Hi, I’ve read a bunch of the threads dealing with shower bases and tile. And, I’ve listened to my local tile store guys tell me what is best to do. Not all advice is the same, thus this post.
My existing floor is ply subfloor over wood joists. All of this is sound. I’ve got pex tubing over the subfloor for infloor heat. My plan is to construct a sloping bed using drypack (cement, sand, a little water) at 1/4 inch per ft. Over that goes Ultraset. On that goes thinset and the tile (2×2 slate). All of this to finish out with the adjacent tiled floor with no curb. I will extend the Ultraset out to cover the bathroom floor before tiling (12×12 slate). I’m using an ABS shower drain with weep holes.
The local tile guys say to do it like this. But, from what I’ve read, it’s not a “mud bed.” Or is it? Am I heading down the wrong road? Or, is this OK?

I am not familiar with Ultraset. Is that the membrane? Membrane goes under the mud.
You should at least look at M. Byrnes Settimg Tile book.

Here is a tile setting forum.
A mud job is not for an amatuer, and a sloping mud job is 10x more difficult.
Where ever you get your info from, you had better be confident in it and your skill before undertaking such a project.
