sidewall eastern white cedar shingles te
I’m doing sidewall shingles using eastern white cedar shingles. the shingles have a slight curve from top to bottom. Do I put the shingles convex side out or concave side out. Rep from shingle marketing company said the growth rings should go to the outside. This is very difficult to determine since the shingles are pre treated at the factory with bleaching oil. Article in Fine Homebuilding a few years back, the author said he puts the hump side out. Any suggestions? Thanks

hump out

pick it up , look at it..and make a judgement call..hump out , yes, but the hump may have been induced by the bundling strap.. the are other things like grain to consider as to which side out...
actually.. if the side will be in the sun.. they're going to look like a bunch of potatoe chips after every rainstorm anyways...
they will lay down and stay down more if you shorten the exposure .. IE: a 16" WC should have a max exposure of 5" ( 5 & 5/16" theoretically.. but some of the shingles will be 15" ) but it will get more of a clamping with a shorter exposure

Just a quick related but not exactly on thread question. I love the look of the typical Cape on the Cape....the weathered shingle siding that has become a silver gray, with darker and lighter areas. Is this white cedar? Is there a particular species or subset that is known for weathering this way? Is it a function of the salty humid air? Or can it be "created" via chemicals by the installer?

the natural effect is the result of white cedars in a salty climate with a constant exposure and no shading.. almost impossible to duplicate consistently..
the best way to achieve it is with a combination of Cabots Bleaching Oil & Cabots Silver Grey mixed 50/50...
