hope someone can help. i am shingling a sidewall on the gable end of a house above an attached garage. the garage roof has a 5 pitch and the exposure to the weather of the shingles is 5″ started the layout (double first course) and gradually worked my way up 3 -4 courses. the problem is that with the overlap of the shingles, i am 4 -5 shingles thick as i approach the peak of the garage roof. the builder of the garage ( not me ) only left 1 1/2 ” of flashing on the sidewall. If i just do double layer for each course stopping as i approach the roof (working from the outside toward the middle) i am left with a triangular 5″ x 12″ gap. Do i counterflash (probably should anyway), but is there another way of laying out the shingles without the buildup of layers as i approach the peak?
sorry bout the convoluted description. any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I understand what you are saying, you need to cut the shingles at the bottom to match the angle of the garage roof. They will not build up in thickness more there than anywhere else. You will find that the last piece is a wispy little triangle which I usually make a little bit longer so that I am able to fasten it without splitting but this does not build up the layers inordinately.
Thanks ever so much, as soon as i read your reply, i went duh! How obvious. I greatly appreciate your help.
