why?
*Eric, how about starting at your public library. See what you can learn there about installation of wood siding, and the merits of different woods. We don't mean to be unfreindly here (well, yes we do, sometimes), but you'll get a more polite response if you ask a more specific question like "what type of nail should I use for cedar siding?" (but of course, you would have found that answer in the book or archives).I'm giving these tips because your inquiry suggests one more house may escape vinyl siding, so I'm all for helping you.Good luck, Steve
*I agree lets get more specific. We will all help with specifics. Also check the archives. And I will second Steve, if it will help preserve a home and not put up vinyl, how can I help!!!
*Eric - As noted your question is general to a fault. So, why don't you look here: http://www.wwpa.org/woodinfo.htm first and then post back with a more specific question, if any.Jeff Clarke
*OK, if he's not going to be specific, I will. Below is a picture of the cabin I'm building. My wife and I are trying to decide on what siding to use. Our latest plan is 8" cedar bevel switching to cedar shingles up on the gable ends, with a cedar-color oil stain. Since the house is so simple - just a rectangle - we'd like to really do something nice with the siding. Any ideas from you guys/gals? jim the hijackerView Image
*yeh, jim... the white always looks good with green trim...and the ladder (i know u got one son, even though it ain;t in the pic)i'd make with white rails and black rungs...leave the pole natural just like it is..is that in teeny -tiny town , wisconsin?
*Mike, No ladder, theres an elevator in the pole. LOL. We're trying to stop the squirrels from moving in....
*jim... i do notice the roof looks like the new Hatteras "Newport Green".. well, we're doin one now with red cedar shingles, white trim, and the green roof.. really nice effect..i've never been a fan of mixing too many materials..i'd be inclined to go all clapboards (in which case i'd paint them), or red cedar shingles..if you went with the clapboards i'd use a fiber cement, say the 6.5 inch with 5 inch exposure, and my trim would be GP-prime trim 5/4 stock...
*Well, you'll have to make some code changes. Like no nuts stored within 3 feet of the fireplace, and tails must be neatly trimmed. Walking inspectors to make sure everyone complies all the time. You could just go ask Bill_Conner for his advice on this matter, he seems pretty good at predjudicial standard codes....
*JimI think you should spray paint the front in camo, and do the rest in board & batten. ..cedar, 1x10 & 1x3, left to age natural like. . . that way when all hell breaks loose and Clay and his marauding anarchists come calling they'll miss you altogether. In the meantime, if ya buy some army surplus camo tarps for draperies, ya can spy on the neighbours with impunity through those big ass windows. . .The B&B will also confuse the city types out scrounging for food afteri the fall(can't see the forest for the trees). You're well on the way to having it all covered what with the green roof which is good for confusing Mongo and his A-10 compadres when they're out lookin fer anarchists to fry.Go for weirdness man. . .points for style... ya only live once.-pm
*Weirdness? How about beer bottles for siding?Jim, have you thought about shakes?MD

I just posted a couple of techniques in a discussion titled custom siding tecniques.

Try some fuzzy green siding like this

*Looks very natural, Ryan... Blends with the environment!Admiringly, Steve
*JimL - it's kind of hard for me to tell from the picture, is that sidewall two stories tall to the eave? If so,it willl be kind of BIG if you do it with one type of siding. Board and batt will make the house look taller than it already is and bevel will make it "squat" a little. I would try to break up that wall somehow, maybe with some design woven into sidewall shingles, like the geese Mike Gueritin wove into his house in last year's "Houses" issue. Maybe a couple big bears and a tree or something. I think something like that would be great, especially up there in Leavenworth.
*Hi Jim,Yes it's 2 stories tall to the eave. Like you said, we thought B&B or vertical shiplap would look too tall. I was going to weave some "diamonds" into the shingles, i will check out last years Houses issue.Mad Dog, I'll ask the "boss" about your beer bottle idea, I might already have enough inside to finish it ;-)I'll talk to my wife about thei camoflauge, bet the neighbors would love it!
*Seems like FHB had a picture of a house sided with beer cans, maybe some bottles too.
