I need some advice/ideas PLEASE:
SITUATION: 2 story house in NY/CT area. 1st floor is block w/veneered brick facing applied 30 years ago. 2nd floor is stick w/plywood sheathing that overhangs 1st floor by 2″. We would like to side entire house w/CertainTeed Cedar Impressions premium vinyl.
QUANDARY to build out a nailing surface for the 1st level to fasten the siding. The 1/2″ veneer is on for keeps (I think they used SuperGlue). We know this because we already chiseled off long slice for a porch ledger board.
PLAN A: 1) Install vertical PT 3/4″ firring strips to the exterior w/contruction adhesive and Hilty charged nails. Fir strips are thin to allow for 2-1/2″ nails to grab some block. 2) Build out the firring and apply 5/8 ply flush w/2nd floor. 3) Install siding.
QUESTIONS: What to do with the cavities created by the fir strips and ply beyond filling the perimeter so bug/bats don’t move in? Fill all cavities w/foam panel? Anyone have a PLAN B?
Many thanks to those that reply!

In my opinion, just fir vertically every 16" just like you suggested and install the same horizontally at the bottom to seal the cavities.
Unless you intend to insulate, I don't see a reason to fill the voids.
*do it just like Ryan says...i'd put felt on top of the furring before you apply your cedar impressions,... ..i think it will help to maintain a more uniform condition behind the vinyl siding so the furring strips won't photograph in the form of condensation lines .. which eventually turn into dirt lines..so furring at 16 inches OC... and 2d layer of furring ... and strips of 1/2" ply to bring it out to the 2d floor surface....blocking at the bottom for insects... and 15# felt over the whole.. then your cedar impressions..b Mike
