Just got back from looking at a job which might be a little too big for a one-man-band to handle but like every renovation it has aspects that I have never done and though I “think” I have a plan of attack I’m really not that sure.
One huge stucco wall (two floors and gable) they want the attached chimney pulled down and the wall sided with probably vinyl. The wall is still good but will have a 2-3 foot wide gap in the stucco running top to bottom once the chimney is pulled down. If I got the job I was thinking of strapping the entire wall every 8-12 inches(over the stucco) but wasn’t sure what to do with the huge vertical slash in the stucco other than furing it out but what about felt etc?
If I was to remove all the stucco say to each outside corner, how do you make and seal the transition from stucco to vinyl? Would I wrap the vinyl around the corner onto the remaing stucco for a better seal or what?
Whether I take the job or not it would be interesting to see how some of you guys would do it/

You're really better off pulling all the stucco down to avoid moisture problems. Repaper the sheathing and do your siding.
As for the transition, the stucco should lap over a piece of vinyl that has a tab that is tacked directly onto the sheathing. After the felt is put on and the vinyl corner piece nailed in place over that, you put a strip of Grace water shield over the vinyl tab & felt, then you nail your wire mesh over that tab to the exposed corner of the vinyl and stucco up to that. This will assure no water leaks in the transition and a smooth line from wall to wall.
Maybe I'm getting old but I'm having a hard time figuring out what you mean at the stucco/vinyl transition. I think I get everything to do with the vinyl but are you saying that the finished edge where the stucco and vinyl meet will still have to be re-stuccoed, albeit only a couple of inches possibly.
I would like to stay away from getting any stucco patches because these units have had stucco patches and look it.
I would think that vinyl siding is a pretty good rain barrier and any moisture which does get through wouldn't jump the strapping gap and just run down the inside of the vinyl siding wouldn't you think?
This is 30 year old stucco and would already have felt in behind that though I don't know what is behind the chimney once it is pulled down. A friend of mine suggested I sheet over the stucco then felt it and then side it. I'm not sure I like that idea at all. What I would really like to do is put felt over the stucco then strap it but staples don't work well with stucco.

I know it's a bit confusing, and a picture or drawing would solve it. Just know that if your joining vinyl to stucco, the vinyl should slip uner the stucco where they meet, so there's an overlay.
