I have seen a simulated “live edge” siding technique about which I would like more information. The technique can best be described as a simulated “live edge” technique of horizontally applied rough sawn (1″ thk.) lumber. The bottom horizontal edge of each piece was beveled from its face back to the board beneath it. In addition to the bevel (which had machine marks similar to those a shaper may make) it was radomly wavy. Perhaps a large chamfer bit in a large horsepower shaper could have cut these edges. If so, though, it looked like it wa “free hand”.
Anybody done this sort of thing? Can I buy boards already machined? Whom do I ask? What do I specify? Any wood that works better than others? This will be for an interior, non structuaral application.
All help is appreciated,
Don

Attached is a pic of a house project done in what we call "brainstorm" siding. Rough sawn waney edge boards, sawn flat, not beveled, are applied to yield the look as shown.
Is this the look you are after? There is no rebate on the overlapping inside edge.

Yup, what he said.
Sawmill slabs that were not edged. Most that I have seen were just debarked and sawn to about an inch thick.
Pine and poplar were pretty common, but there are much better species for siding. Depends on yer location and sawmills preferences.

You think that's funny? Watch THIS!...I can only do it once tho'
Don,
Check out this website http://www.lakesidelumber.com . They have a product called "Skirl" siding that has a nice wavy pattern.
Yeah, i've seen plenty of that stuff. I built a few buildings in Upstate new york in the Adirondack state park. It was just milled slabs that weren't edged. We put this coating on it called Adirondack brown that was about the consistency of gear oil. Looked great with the woodsy setting, plus i think the Park has a regulation that 30% (or something like that) of any building built there has to be covered with it.
