Siding To Grade?

| Posted in General Discussion on May 10, 2000 09:34am

I’ve got a couple of buildings on slabs that need residing. All of the various sidings (bar vinyl, which I hate), say that you should keep the stuff 6″ off the ground. What’s a guy to do?

What is the condition of the underlayment/sheathing within a foot of the slab? If it is sound then I would go with vinyl. If not, well I guess I would fix with PT plywood and look into a metal siding product. Sometimes there are no good options.

*Andrew,Install rot resistant skirt board with dripcap. Double prime and paint before installing.KK

*You can get a t&g pressure treated 2x8 made just for the skirtboard KK's talking about. I install two or three courses of this horizontally, buried a few inches, around the perimeter of polebarns and keep the metal a foot or so off the ground.

*There are a couple of reasons to keep siding above grade: avoid moisture penetration into the siding and wall framing; make the subterrainian termites build tunnels along the concrete on their way to dinner so you can spot 'em.The "best" answer is to re-grade, but that's usually pretty extensive & costly.I'm not keen about the skirt board idea because of the inability to sight termite tubes and the possibility of moisture wicking up behind the skirt board and causing some rot in the wall. But, like Steve said, sometimes there are no good options.Bob

*That's a real good reason to always use a short stemwall, even for a slab with thickened edge..

*Jim, I couldn't agree more. There are a lot of old, detached garages on slabs in my neck of the woods. The one's with framing on the slab often have rot &/or bugs in the sill plate & framing, the one's on a stem wall rarely.Bob

*Has anybody got a solution for pole construction with no placed to put a stem wall? I build alot of pole buildings and never had a good way to handle this.

*no ryan.. i always just consider one of the prerequisites for a pole bldg is a level pad..if i need a retaining wall... so be it.. we prep by scraping the loam and stockpiling it for finish..then we lay a 12 inch to 18 inch pad of gravel (bank run).. about two to four feet bigger than our footprint.. then we dig our poles...if termites are a problem we treat.. but the poles are .060... and the 2x10 skirt (one high or two) is what we use for our bottoms... so bait the ground around the srtucture if termites are a concern....

*Ryan-I always skirt the edge of pole building with treated 2x10. I kinda like the look, and they have seemed to hold up very well.pm
