Simple stair job,interesting newel posts
Finishing up a simple u-shaped stair. The one thing which made it interesting was attaching the metal rails to the newel posts without exposing the screws.

Well..........
Tell us more, please.
The interesting part, for me anyway, was to let the metal rail into the newel so that it would appear as if the metal sprang from the wood unsupported. It turned out to be more work than I would have thought. The metal rail is welded on the ends so it have to be mortised into the newel and then a "skin" applied over the face. The whole thing was made from 8qtr white oak and then an "L" shaped portion removed on the tablesaw so that the grain matched. Then scribed and cut to match the metal ends.
Sorry, I don't get it. Can you post a sketch. I don't follow the L-shaped cutout."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Fast Eddie,The newel is made up of 3 pieces of 8qtr, the blue and red section are 1 section of the glue-up. In an attempt to keep the grain pattern flowing the red section is removed using a tablesaw. Everything is oversized at this point. The point where the red and blue meet are Domino'd together and then it is run through a planer to finial size. This allows the metal rail to be let into the newel with one edge against the blue section. The red part is then cut to slide over the metal rail so that there is only one glue line on the face and the other glue line matching the rest of the newel.
I hope that makes sense
Forgot to attach to drawing

Thanks for posting that. Man, I love seeing that level of detailing - nice! Have any "in progress" pics to add?
