Hey guys, I’m doing a walk in shower that drops 2 1/2 inches into the existing 2×10 floor joists. I have to notch 6 joists. The shower is approx 6′ x 6 1/2′. I’m gonna sister the notched joists with a 2x 6 or something similar. How far past the notch do I need the sistered joist to run on each side? Does It need to rest on the mudsill or I beams? Anyone have a method they use for this?

Whats the span of the joists?
Loads above?
Bearing Walls? etc?
all the way to the ends.
at least that is what the engineer told me on a similar.

double the outside joists, cut out the ones in the shower's footprint and replace them 1/2" lower
Id say all the way to the ends on both sides as well. Might not hurt to put two 2x6 one on each side either. That shower will be awful heavy with one (or two) people standing in it with the water on. I'm assuming that the reason for lowering it is to have the shower floor flush with the bathroom floor?
Yeah, I actually did double the end joists and notched the 2 inches needed. So the 2x10 joists became 2x8's. There are two I beams underneath so I ran my 2x6 sisters from beam to beam and put squash blocks underneath the I beams to catch the ends on the 2x'6s I think this should be sufficient. And yes the reason is to have a walk in shower with no curb. I used advantech 3/4 tongue and groove sub floor with adhesive. Should be sufficient i hope
No, pictures? I would like to see.
