We’re adding a gas fireplace to our relatively small family room (approx 13’x15′). The fireplace will serve as additional heat on really cold days (likely with a duct/fan moving heat to another room as well), as well as general ambiance.
I’m having trouble figuring out what size fireplace to put in. I’m not so concerned with BTUs (I can figure out some guidelines for that) as with appearances — I don’t want the finished fireplace to look out of proportion to the space. I’m leaning towards a 36″ fireplace, but really don’t have a good feel whether that’s too large or too small or just right.
Does anyone know a rule of thumb giving ideas as to what size fireplace to put in what sized room (or on what sized walls)?

No thumb rules, but why not make a mock-up out of cardboard or some such and see what you like? Also, the amount and positioning of furniture in the room may affect your decision.

A 36" unit will probably look about right in that size space.
I'm with Mike why not make a cardboard cutout and set it there? you're the best judge of that.
