My client would like exterior wood shutters installed on the majority (20+) of his windows. I need to order the shutters and was wondering how to go about choosing the right size shutter for each window. I’ve measured the height of each window from top of the window trim to top of the sill and measured width from each edge of the window trim.
Is the width of each shutter 1/2 of the total width of the window trim?
Is this the correct way to measure the window width or should I be measuring width of only the storm window/sash?
Thanks for your help

Perfect! Thanks alot!
Will these shutters be operable or decorative?
most every shutter manufacturer I have bought from has had a guide to use in determining the answer to this Q.
If the shutters will be operable, a lot depends on whether they will fit within the ext trim or overlay it, and what kind of hinging hardware you will use.

since they'll be installed on a historic home, they will be operable. however, i'm sure they'll remain decorative. goldhiller sent me a great link re: shutters. i was measuring the width incorrectly and i was also incorrect on mounting procedures.
