Wanted to solicit some opinions on sizing chandeliers for a foyer.
Several lighting companies have supplied us with very wide ranges using their “rules of thumb”…generally, I have heard that the diameter should be 1/4 to 1/3 the floor room dimension….eg. 12 x 12 foyer would get a minimum 3 ft diameter chandelier. Our particular application is a 13 x 13 2-story open foyer…approx 18 ft high.
I am posting this message because I have seen some very insightful comments here on some difficult topics….
any experts out there on this…any guidance would help??

Try my favorite, http://www.rejuvenation.com, for their discussion of this topic. Perhaps their best recommendation is to hang a cardboard model of the light fixture. specifically: http://www.rejuvenation.com/iqg4eae9ab/faqcatselecting/faqinumber0004/faq/faqshow.html
They make very nice handmade, affordable, and customizable chandeliers, too. For example, we took one of the larger ones and reduced the number of lampholders for a smaller room -- notice how well it fits in with the decor... (Work in progress!)
*Good Golly Andrew. Are you living in that site. Your wife must be a saint. Get some help and get that thing done. Do like the light and airy feel though. Best of luck.
*Wife? What wife? Where'd she go anyway? Kids? It's "on the list." And it's spring, anyway. :)

Jerry: It is not only the width of the room that is important. In a foyer, especially, you must think 3-dimensionally. A two-story space needs a chandelier with height, as well as the proper width. Also, consider what the chandelier looks like viewed from the bottom, since it will be hanging high above you.
I have a 12 ft. x 12 ft. foyer, two stories high. I hung a chandelier with 4 tiers and about 3 1/2 ft. high. If the foyer has an outside (second story) window, it is nice to center the chandelier in front of the window. Bonnie B.
