Just a quick question to wich I believe I know the answer.
If you measure the inside of the window jamb to be EXACTLY and possibly TIGHT 30″ w x 57 3/4″ h ; what size would you order the vinyl insert replacement window?
I was sent to do a double check measurement, delivered the measurements to the boss. The next day in a conversation with him asked him if he ordered them and what size.
To wich he replies; “I ordered them what they measure”.
He didn’t source them from the supplier I suggested, and I told him I would likely have ordered the 1/4″ smaller all the way around. I would have at least ASKED the salesman.
Your take?
I’m NOT taking shid for windows that need to be pounded in.

Vinyl replacements here are typically sized 1/4" under a full inch on the width, and either 1/4 or 3/4 under a full inch on the height- that's all they'll do. I'd order a 30x57 1/2, which would actually measure 29 3/4 x 57 1/4. The adjustable head expander would take up the 1/2 in at the top. Or, you could order a 58, which would come in at 57 3/4, and if necessary, just run a sander or plane across the top of the extrusion to take an 1/8 off.

Avoid the middle man and talk to the salesman yourself, when you ar standing in front of the opening, or specify nominal or actual size, or have the salesman drive buy and do his own field measurements.
Most sales people will be happy to get out of the office to come see you!
TRIGGER
Like Bob said, if you give the opening size they generally deduct 1/4" from the width, and 1/2" or so from the height.
You can order them by the exact size that you want, but you have to be very specific not to make the deductions.
If I have a big order, I have the salesman come out, and verify my measurements. Between the 2 of us we usually eliminate some problems.

Thanks Dustin and ALL.
I'll check tomorrow to see if the order was sized from the measurements.
He ordered from a lumber yard and not the window/door/millwork supplier I recommended.
I usually give the as measured and let them do the figuring. I want them to fit.
I was asked about how much time to figure for install, asked to double check the measurements...........guess I just couldn't be trusted to do the ordering.
Hmmmmmmmm.

first of all, you must always check the openings with a framing square.
i prefer that the windows are a 1/4 to a 1/2 under exact size in width and in height.
we use certainteed units that have hollow sides which can easily be trimmed if it gets tight.
