I want to put a new texture on the walls of one of my rooms. Of course, the walls are painted. If the surface is clean and roughed up, does anyone know if a gypsum plaster skim coat should bond? Plan to also use a bonding agent. The walls are plaster and are pretty solid. They look like they have canvas or wallpaper under the paint. Hate to have to strip the whole room. Could be a nightmare. I’ve got some experience with traditional plastering and understand the fundamentals fairly well. I’ve also removed enough plaster to know I want to avoid it as much as possible. And various pataches I’ve made seem to bond very well with the surrounding painted surfaces.

You'll need to find out what's under it. If it does have paper under the paint, I would not chance it with a clients house. If you want to take a bet on a long shot on your own house, then I would be interested to know how it turns out.
Well, it is my house. Would rather do it right the first time. Is your main concern the wallpaper delaminating. Old wallpaper does tend to peel rather easily with a just a little bit of water, yes?What if it is just paint? Can plaster bond to that effectively or must it go directly on another plaster surface?
Whoa..do not ( unless ya REALLY have to) take off a "clothlike" wall covering, UNLESS you really want to eat it.
If you want to SKIM coat, DO IT. If, IF you open a can of wall surface, look out for the worms...trust me.

What is the concern with removing the linen.. a lot of flaking plaster? If a test section delaminates easily, that seems to indicate it should probably be removed, yes? If it's embedded linen, it will likely not peel easily, yes?
