Tina - I like to frame the wells in and cover them with whatever is on the rest of the ceiling. I like to "open them up" when going through an attic by dropping the framing plumb on one end and frame it square from the other end, so in section the light well resembles an irregular triangle. - jb
*Jim I like that idea. I am not a big skylight fan but when I bild my wife will insist on some. I did one that was a small light about 16 inches and expanded the well to over 2 foot at the botom. Makes the well look deep but lets in light from more angle. Blue celings are getting popular around here. Paint some clouds on it and use the skylight for a sun if you want a different look. God I have been working with too many decorators lately.Rick Tuk
*I'm a big skylight fan. The climate here in Western WA is mild, but we don't get much sun for 5 or 6 months. It's unusual to see a house without 2 or 3 around here. - jb

Saw the new K&B issue of FHB and there was interesting idea for skylight finish (even though it was a fake skylight in the article). We have several skylights and had thought we'd drop a translucent panel at ceiling height and put full spectrum fluorescent tubes inside the panels, so at night it would still look like daylight coming through. ( We have to use fluorescent for all our lighting since we're off the grid). But I'm thinking this treatment may look too much like a dentist's office (no offense to all you oral experts out there). I liked the vertical lattice idea in the article, but was wondering if anyone else out there has ideas for how to finish off the skylights. Most of ours are have to shine through attic space before getting into living space.
