Hi,
I am making a couple of skylights from salvaged
french door insulated(and tempered) glass.
The glass is 30″x60″.
I am concerned about these being too large a span for
a skylight.
Is there a rule of thumb or someone with an
opinion about this…?
Thanks

Many years ago when the in-thing was the "Envelope House" for energy conservation, I participated in a owner built house and provided some materials.
Included in those materials were 80 pc of 36"x 72" patio IG replacement glasses, which were installed on the roof deck of the "solar atrium"..............only to fail long before the warranty expired.
Law suit was in the works aginst the manufacturer for the failed I/G units.........but
Standard vertical glazing is not warranteed when used on the horizontal plane. The difference is in type of adhesive used in the manufacture of vertical glass versus horizontal glass that takes a lot more heat in a less stable position.
I would not use standard door glazing I/G panels in a skylight unless the manufacturer would okay the panels as designed for the heat load in a horizontal position.
