Im doing a remodeling project that involves installing a skylight in a structural insulation panel. Panel supports are 8′ on center with the skylight in the center. What kind of problems can I expect when I cut a big hole in one of these panels? Do I need to stay away from the seams? Does a skylight ruin the structural integrity of these panels.

When you cut a major hole in a Sturctural Insulated Panel, it usually means bye-bye structure. Stress risers at the corners are a recipe for failure, not to mention the interruption of the skin. Remember that a SIP, in any orientation other than vertical, is no different that a very wide I-beam. The skins are the flanges, the core is the web. Would you cut the flanges off a section of I-beam and ask it to do its job?
Your SIP manufactuer, if they have their act together, should be able to provide you with an engineer-stamped table of allowable openings and alterations to their panels. Start there first.
Does your location require engineered solutions for a case like this? Your building inspection department might have an opinion too before you get too far.
