Skylights – paint or stain?

I have a customer that is concerned about the longevity of the interior finish on the interior wood surfaces of his skylights. Oil base paint or exterior varnish would seem to be the two choices. Does anyone know of a better finish? Any comments or recommendations on those two choices?
