Can roofing slate be used for kitchen counters? My thought is to cut the sides square with a wet saw, polish the front edge, and install with thinset. I have found a source of reclaimed roof tile at $1 each, which works out to about a dollar a sq ft after trimming.

Sure. Seal it tho'. IIRC someone once used hot wax ( parrafin and Bees) and buffed up right nice.

Are you going to leave the nail holes or trim them back so those are eliminated?
