I need to replace a walkway that leads to the front entrance. The tile is 12″ by 12″ red slate. Finding the slate tiles was a work itself. I went to 3 tile stores, only one was familiar with it and could get it. The store can get domestic or tiles from Brazil, the domestic being more expensive. I heard that lesser quality slate will spall(is this the word?) under the weather(New Jersey). Is this the price difference? Another question is, does the slate get installed in same way as ceramic, or do I need to seal the bottom like some marble tiles? Any other advices would be welcome and thank you in advance.

Can't help you on your other information, butg do not seal the bottom of the slate tiles. Even though there are different types of sealers, most inhibit an adequate bond.
Have you done a web search for the slate? Tile stores are local retail distributors only.
