slate flooring in kitchen

Hi, I am new to chat room services so bear with me.  My daughter and family are building a new house and are installing slate flooring in their kitchen.  Last night they were seeing how resilient it was to spills (they have 2 small children) and found that water basically pours right through.  Anyone know what the best treatment is for this type of flooring?
