Ok, guys, get your guns loaded, I’ve got another tile question. I’m laying 12″ saltillo tile with 1/2″ grout joints, and I did a pretty good layout job such that almost all of the cuts leave large pieces. Except there is one area where I have a 1 1/2″ space between the last full tile and the wall. I don’t think I want to install a 1/2″ wide tile, but I’m not sure how else to do it.
By the way, I found a neat way to cut the tile. I have one of those very cheap 10″ bench top table saws, and I mounted a masonry abrasive blade. It makes a lot of dust, but cuts efortlessly. The only problem is that you have to be careful not to pinch the blade at the end of the cut. Anyone who has worked with saltillo knows how uneven it is, and it’s easy to have the two halves collapse on the blade right at the end. For those of you who have not used saltillo, it trulky is a hand made product. the 11 1/2″ dimension varies +/- 1/4″, the thickness is +/- 1/8″, and almost every tile is concave on the back; but then there are some that are concave on the front, and some have two corners up and two down. Makes for an interesting installation.
