Small pocket door… which hardware?
HO wants a typical 2×4 framed wall, sheetrock both sides, with a pair of wood-framed glass panels that open like a pair of pocket doors, i.e. the opening is empty when both panels are slid completely into the wall. The opening is to be about 48″ x 48″, and each panel about 24″ W x 48″ H. I’m thinking 5/4 stiles and rails for the panels, with the glass stopped in. This could have wheels on the bottom, wheels on the top, or maybe just dado track (although probably not… it’d bind too much). Whaddya think… how would you do it? Typical pocket door hardware is too big, I think.

David, would this hardware work for you:

Mike, thanks for posting that. I don't know if they would work. The doors are seen from both sides... which I should have mentioned in the original post.
Hettich might have what you need. Check out the different options with Woodworkers' Hardware.
Hettich's Grant line has this. It looks perfect to me.

Stanley makes a nice pocket-door hardware kit; includes everything you need except the doors IIRC. No reason the hardware should be too big; it's made to work with 1-3/8" doors. If you're gonna make up those panels out of 5/4, you should be okay.
You will need some sort of valence across the top of the opening to hide the track. If you design this nicely, it can be an asset to the woodwork. If you want it to disappear, you need to hang your gyprock so it extends down past the header 3-5", then mud a hard bead onto the edges so you can finish them. You might consider gluing a second piece of gyprock inside each valence extension for extra strength. That extra thickness shouldn't interfere with the doors.
The big bug-a-boo with pocket doors is: if they ever come off the track, yer scroo-ed. You have to tear open the wall to fix it. So follow the instructions very carefully....

I'd go with the Johnson pocket door kit. I'm not sure what your concerns are. If you install the stops under the header with countersunk screws you can always remove for adjustments or untracking.
