I've heard of it quite a bit. I think it comes from using cheap, unbaffled ridge vents.
I was born by Caesarean section... But not so you'd notice. It's just that when I leave a house, I go out through the window.
I'm also in the northeast. L.I, N.Y.
Many ridge vents later that I've installed in my houses no snow or rain in my attics.
My guess is you have a lousy ridge vent or seriously strong winds on the side of your house. More likey a seriously lousy ridge vent.
