so ya don’t like thompsons, whats better?
i swear i don’t think i have ever heard of anyone in the const field that had any good words to say about thompsons waterseal.i have not had any luck either ,so i’m in that crowd also.
so i’ve just power washed the deck and am ready to seal it so what do you guys like to use?do you use clear or something with a toner?
last time i did it i used olympic brand and i will say it was still beading water 3 years later in some areas.
also i usally just use a garden sprayer to apply ,if that makes a difference.
thanks larry
if a man speaks in the forest, and there’s not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?

What ever you choose to use, for the decking, apply with a roller and back brush. I think the brush brand for the stain application is by Olympia, there must be 10 Zillion bristles.
Penofin oil

I just did a small deck with Cabots penetrating oil - seems like a good product. The railing is spar varnish.

Sikkens
I've read some good reviews of Cabot. But for my house and outdoor projects, I've stayed with Penofin. I've used it on an outdoor bench that I made, originally I finished it with spar urethane but after a year in the sun and sprinklers occasionally hitting it, I refinished it with Penofin and it has held up really well. On my recent house remodel, I had all the cedar shingles sealed on all 6 sides with Penofin and my garage doors sealed with Penofin.
I would also recommend Sikkens....highly.
Sikkens and Penofin are both good, but we've also been using Cabot's Australian Timber Oil lately with good results.

They have a good marketing program.
(-:
Olympic gets good ratings. I haven't used it long enough to see how it lasts, but Consumer's Reports and this study rated Olympic well:

I used Olympic on my deck last year- already seams to
need another coat. Well not quite, but it doesn't look
nearly as pretty as last year.

Sikkens, Cabots, or Penofin.
We mostly use Sikkens SRD.
I for 1 think Thompsons water seal is great.....................@ Marketing.
