I'm about to work with soapstone for the first time too! I was told that typical carpentry tools work just fine. I don't think I'll run it through the 12" Makita planer, though they said, "No problem."

I cut my soap stone counters with an inexpensive diamond blade and carbide tipped router bits with a peice of foam unerneath the stone. It makes a lot of dust, talc is like asbestos don't breath it in. A rasp works to smooth out the edges and a palm sander I used a yellow pencil for layout a template is a good idea because the saw wants to travel a wee bit. Go slow and work carefully.
Good Luck, Andy
