Soffit install – should I be concerned?
We had new gutters and aluminum soffits/fascia installed on our home about 4 years ago and I discovered this weekend that none of the original soffit material was removed and that the new soffit was simply installed over the old. Is this common practice or should I be concerned. Since the install, we’ve had issues with ice dams and a lot of icicles that we never experienced before so I’m wondering if perhaps the double layer somehow restricts the normal venting/airflow and has led to the new issues? Any advice would be helpful.

Yes, it's common practice, and yes, you should be concerned. We had a neighbor who had his rafter tails rot out as a result of this.
(I'd be concerned about the quality of hte soffit work as well -- likely it's poorly installed and allowing rainwater to get behind it.)
