ALL RIGHT, YOU VETERANS PROBABLY HEARD ABOUT THIS TECHNIQUE, BUT HERE GOES.
WHEN WE FRAME BASEMENT SOFFITS IT’S ALWAYS A PAIN. WE DECIDED TO USE MATERIALS THAT ALREADY EXIST. TJI’S OR LPI’S, THEY ALREADY HAVE THE FLANGE TO TOENAIL TO. WE JUST SNAP OUR LINES PERPENDICULAR TO THE EXISTING JOISTS, CUT OUR TJI TO LENGTH AND THEN NAIL THE TJI’S TO THE BOTTOM OF THE JOISTS. MOST OF THE WIDTHS ARE PERFECT FOR BEAMS AND MECHICANICAL TRUNKS. IF NOT YOU JUST NAIL 2″X4″‘S OR PLYWOOD TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TJI’S AND YOU HAVE AN INSTANT SOFFIT.

ps If I ever do another basement, I'll think about it.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, all of it is considered bottom of the barrel by Gabe. According to him I am not to be counted amongst the worst of the worst. If you want real framing information...don't listen to me..just ask Gabe!
